Gothic literature had its beginnings in 1764, when Horace Walpole wrote "The Castle of Otranto". History of Walpole contained all the elements that defining gender. Over the years, many authors have taken their stab at writing gothic literature, putting his distinctive stamp on it.
Ann Radcliffe, writing in 1794, gave the genre a sense of legitimacy when they questioned the supernatural elements, explaining it away as natural causes. Also introduced the villain melancholy at the end of the story, reveals the hero.
Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, was undoubtedly influenced by elements Gothic, but his novel is considered one of the first science fiction novels to write.
Another influential author in the Gothic tradition was Edgar Allan Poe. In "The Fall of the House of Usher," explored issues such classic Gothic decadence, death and madness, but added his own twist – Miro the terrors of the soul.
Also during the writing of Poe was Emily Bronte. "Wuthering Heights" explores the Gothic elements in the mountains of Yorkshire through the haunting "Isidore" character and remains a favorite today.
"With Bram Stroker's Dracula", the villain most famous Gothic has never been created. Eastern Europe also established as a favorite place for the genre. More recently, in the 1930s, HP Lovecraft has been linked to gender, mixes gothic horror, setting a new bar for writers.
Romance has also been mixed with the gothic genre. During the 1950's, 60's and 70's, authors like Victoria Holt and Dorothy Fletcher focused on women and their connection with a gloomy castle.
Another sub-genre known as Southern Gothic. This sub-genre takes traditional Gothic elements and plants in Southern States USA.
For a novel known as "Gothic", is to follow a set of rules. First, the adjustment takes place in a castle or if the story takes place in the United States, a farm family age. That's what makes it so attractive southern Gothic style as an old plantation can be used. The property, be it a castle, the mansion, or plantations, sometimes it can be abandoned, sometimes busy, or near the caves can increase the mystery and often can contain secret passages, trap doors, and mysterious rooms.
Then, the novel has to carry an atmosphere of mystery and suspense. In the recent novel, "The Thirteenth Tale," an atmosphere of mystery created around the paternity of the twins, Emmeline and Adelaine.
Usually there is an ancient prophecy that participate with omens and visions. In "The Thirteenth Tale," the narrator tells Margaret that there is a third girl who follows Emmeline and Adeline all, calling it a vision.
Usually there are supernatural events that occur in gothic fiction. No matter if they gives a natural explanation or not, the case is important.
Other elements of Gothic literature include great emotion, women in distress, a male figure powerful or tyrannical and metonymy – as rain metaphors used to represent something else, such as pain.
If you are thinking of exploring the genre, read a few books first to get the "feel" for it. It can be fun to write, but the plot and pace should be firm to make the story succeed.
